The Ultimate List of Workout Essentials for Beginners
Alright, I’m the first to admit that I am no gym expert by any means. Aside from a short health stint in college, the summer of 2015 was really when I found a love for working out. Specifically, I started running almost every day and sometimes I was even working out twice a day. So after passing along my quick healthy habits to start, I figured what better way to keep you motivated than to share my workout essentials for beginners?
Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need top of the line workout gear to get fit. I know, groundbreaking, right? It can be easy to get caught up in the fancy leggings and watches but they’re completely unnecessary. In today’s post, I’m going to outline what you actually need to start working out and I’ll even give my recommendations on where to splurge and where to save money when it comes to your gear!

The first thing you need to get is a good pair of shoes. The type of shoe is going to vary depending on the type of activities you want to do (for example, a running shoe versus a cross trainer) but regardless of the type of shoe, you’re going to want to invest in these. You can find a great pair for under $100, while these aren’t the priciest splurge item, a good pair of shoes is key for a good workout. Having the right pair of shoes can keep you from getting injured and will also help you to feel less tired, especially after a run.
Variety of Clothing
If you’re new to workouts, then it will probably take some time to figure out the type of clothing you actually like to work out in. For example, I typically run in some sort of leggings and a tank top. I hate having my arms covered when I’m running but since I’m short and have bigger thighs, I prefer wearing pants (chaffing is no fun, amiright). You don’t have to spend a lot of money on workout clothing, I get most of mine from Walmart and Target. While these aren’t necessary splurge items, I’m a big fan of getting cute and/or bright colored workout clothes. I even color coordinate (sometimes), who cares if that’s basic? Workouts are that much easier to get motivated for if your gear is cute.
Girl, get yourself a good one (or five). Sports bras are definitely a must have if you’re hitting the gym for us girls with larger chests and a MUST splurge item. Trust me when I say that you don’t want to go to the gym in a cheap sports bra… I’m not even going to describe the disasters that can happen. Now, I’m not saying cheap sports bras are something you shouldn’t spend money on because I have about 5 or 6 of them in my own drawers but I do highly suggest investing in two or three good sports bras.
A gym bag to hold all of your gym essentials is key but it’s not something you need to spend a lot of money on. Think about it: you’re going to be filling the bag which sweat soaked items such as towels, clothes, and stinky shoes. Do you really need to spend more than $20 on a bag to hold that stuff? Probably not. Gym bags should be able to hold your clothes, shoes, and any toiletries such as travel deodorant, face wipes, etc.
Again, not a big splurge item but definitely a necessity. I love a good water bottle so I don’t mind spending the money, especially if I know it’s going to help me drink more water. I love the giant cups from Starbucks with the straws (which is what I keep at my desk and around the apartment) but my absolute favorite water bottle are the camelbak brand. They’re super easy to use and don’t spill, which is a total bonus if you’re like me and very accident prone. Staying hydrated is key when you’re working out, especially if you’re a beginner so having a water bottle in your gym bag at all times will ensure you never forget it (like I do… a lot).
If you're a newbie to workouts, I hope you found this post helpful! At the end of the day, you're at the gym to work your booty off, not look cute or have the nicest stuff. I hope giving you options about what to actually splurge on versus what to save money on can be your little guide to getting those new workout essentials you need to kickstart your workouts!
